My name is Kate Adams-Valsing. My husband André, and I live in South Central Pennsylvania with our three youngest children. About a year and a half ago one of our twins , Sam, was diagnosed on the autism spectrum. He has now completed early intervention and spends the first part of his preschool day at the Londonderry School, in Harrisburg, PA, with his twin sister and older brother. The second half of his day is spent in an autism support classroom where he receives one-on-one therapy.

André and I have found having a child with autism defines many decisions we make every day: what we eat, where we go, where we are able to socialize, how we set up the house and yard, even where and how we vacation or simply have a family outing. I have often noticed our other children taking on the role of Sam’s ambassador at the park or in public explaining that their “brother doesn’t talk because he has autism.”

One of the hallmarks of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the isolation the affected person seems to live in. I have found that this isolation carries over to our family as well. I try to take our son with ASD to places where he will be comfortable and has a chance for success. Often this means we stay home and don’t accept invitations from friends to  parties, drive-in movies, sporting events camping trips and so on. Even something as simple as a trip to the grocery store can make Sam so physically uncomfortable that it is simply unethical to expect him to endure it. Thus, the creation of ASD Together: a safe harbor for families to come together and share common experiences

I hope you will consider joining us in making positive family memories while enjoying Adventure and Special Days Together.
